Happy Birthday Lindsey!
Today is my neice Lindsey's birthday. It's so strange to think that she's a preteen now. I remember so clearly when she was born. I was away at college and I had to fly home to see her! Now she's getting all growny on me and it makes me sad...also makes me feel a bit old! She broke her big toe last week so I hope she is feeling better today and able to enjoy her birthday. We love you Lindsey and wish we could be there to celebrate it with you! Baker and Bleeker send their kisses! Can't wait to see you soon! (BTW, I'm a dork. I originally posted this yesterday thinking that it was April 1st and realized later in the day that it was still March...ha! Sorry Lindsey!)
Celebrating 5 Years

As mentioned earlier, Brad and I had our 5 year anniversary on Friday but we actually celebrated on Saturday night. Our gift to each other was our new camera and a night out in the District, sans Baker. First stop, shopping. With a baby and a condo that has yet to sell in Atlanta, Brad and I don't do a ton of shopping, at least what we would like to do, but on Saturday, we did! We hit up our favorite shopping spot since we lived in NY, Zara and the usual staple H&M.

Afterwards, we had reservations at The Melting Pot, a first for Brad and I. Our friends love it, and though it is a chain, we thought we'd give it a try. We actually really enjoyed it! Well, we enjoyed it while we were eating but not so much afterwards when I felt like I was literally going to explode. We were told by friends to get the Big Night Out which consists of 4 courses: cheese fondue served with apples, vegetables, and bread, 2 salads, meat course (we chose the one that came with filet mignon, shrimp, chicken, pork tenderloin and sirloin - and this is the small option - that you cook at the table in a pot of your choice of stock or oil. The final course is chocolate fondue...of course, we chose the Original that was swirled with peanut butter (my favorite!) and served with cheesecake, fruit, marshmallows and rice krispie treats! Good grief, could you get any more food? Never will we ever get that again! Don't get me wrong, it was fabulous but it's just too much. We were both full after the cheese fondue and still had 3 more courses to go! I think cheese and chocolate is plenty for anyone! But we enjoyed ourselves, stuffed and all, and had a great night with each other. I love anniversaries! We can't wait to see what the next 5 years bring us!

Enjoying our night out. I really need a tan...I'm looking very pastey!
Brad cooks our meat and veggies.

Yum, strawberries and chocolate!

14 Months and Baker's New "Tricks"

This past week, Baker turned 14 months old! It's so hard to believe that he is already 2 months into his second year. Time is truly flying by and the next month is only going to go by faster with our upcoming move. Baker is turning into an independent little toddler more and more each day. Just this past week, he started signing, finally! I wasn't sure he ever would because we've been doing it with him since he was about 8 months old (but not very consistently) and thought that he just wasn't interested in it. We've heard stories from friends that some kids just don't do it and we thought that would be the case with Baker. But this week, he started signing "milk" and "more". (I posted a video below of him signing for milk so be sure to watch it.) He also does his own little thing for bath where he acts like he's washing his hair. And just this week, he's started blowing kisses...gotta love it! But our most favorite thing that he does - he loves to give kisses!! All we say is "Baker, give mommy/daddy kisses" and he leans in very sweetly and slowly and pecks us. Nothing is more precious than a kiss from your own baby. All the money in the world couldn't replace that. Watching him communicate with us in all these different ways is just amazing and so cute to watch but being able to communicate with him also makes life a lot easier for us.

Having not posted much in the past 2 weeks, I feel like I'm having to play catch up on all the things he's doing now! So, here is a few other bits -- If we ask him where his belly button is or where is mommy or daddy's, he will pull up his shirt (or ours) and put his finger in it. As long as he doesn't do this to us in public, we will be okay! He also tries to put on his shoes...the keyword here is try. He is no where near getting them on but he does put the shoe up against his foot. A for effort, right?

So, things are definitely changing around here. Some changes are not so pleasant, like teething. Baker has 2 bottom molars now and at least one on top peaking through. Of course I haven't checked in a week so there could be more. But the drool is overflowing and it effects his temperment without doubt. But we're pressing through it because for every rough day, there is a really amazing day to make up for it!

The following pictures are of Baker hamming it up for the new camera. I can't turn it on without him cheesing for it. You can definitely see a similar smile in all of them! What's interesting is that you can see how silly he is at home but he still has a very cautious side to him when we're out in public. I think a lot of friends never see this side of him because he's always so timid. Hopefully he'll grow out of that!

Playing in his messy playpen. He loves to dump all of his toys out and stand on them. This particular time, he was standing in the blue box and trying to reach for the window blinds cord...that is until he saw the camera!

Just look at that face...up to no good. And he's sporting his new Cambridge Univ. shirt his Nana and Papa sent from England. He's gotten all kinds of fun things while they've been away!

Once again, he spots the camera...

And again. He's too funny.

Daddy takes Baker for a ride in his wagon. He'll climb in it and expect us to push him around...he loves it! I can't wait until we move and he has more room to play with it!

Video: So, this is Baker signing for milk but bear with the first part. I wanted to get a video of him doing it but I made the mistake of asking him if he wanted milk. Saying that always gets him worked up because he then wants it immediately. So, he's a bit upset in the beginning, he signs in the middle and you can see how much he wanted the milk in the end!

Thursday at Gymboree

Okay, so this post is really just an excuse to post pictures from our new camera and because I haven't had the chance to take any new pictures lately...I was very eager! So, I got a little camera happy at Baker's Gymboree class the other day. I am still learning the in's and out's of the new camera but we're getting there! Anyway, we were really excited to go back this week because we missed our class last Thursday due to a stomach bug that I caught. Unfortunately Brad got it later that morning...it was not a fun day for us. So, Baker was thrilled to be back in class and I was excited to meet up with Molly and Claire. Gymboree is more like our social hour with each other and we often joke that she and I are going to get kicked out for not listening! :o) But we always have lots of fun!

All of the kiddos pushing the air log. Baker gets bored with this one now for some reason. He usually just backs off and does his own thing midway. This picture cracked me up though because when some of the kiddies saw my camera, they stopped to stare and give a little smile.

Getting ready to climb up the boxes to get to the slide!

Molly and Claire having fun!

Sweet Claire in awe of the bubbles

Baker takes a ride down the slide with his teacher Ms. Casey by his side.

Ms. Casey grabbed the bag of balls and while getting the next center ready had them draped over her shoulder. Baker spotted them and went right over to her...he waited patiently for her to turn around, without taking his eyes off of them, and give him a couple!

Then Claire wanted in on the fun. The two of them were hilarious, like a little old couple, trying to get the ball from the other. Despite each having two of their own, they only wanted the one the other had!

Well, we see what happened moments later! Baker looks so innocent right? Ha! I'm only kidding...Claire just lost her balance as I was in mid-shot and her legs and feet only made the picture. Too funny!

It's funny that the two of them stay pretty close by each other despite
all of the other kids around.

The busy box always gets their attention!

Baker eating something from the busy box, as usual. Thank God they wash these after each use!

Back at home, Baker finally figured out that this duck is for pushing around!

Our new camera has a bright red light that comes on every time the shutter button is pressed. The minute Baker sees it, he gets the cheesiest grin on his face...literally, every single time!

This is Baker's 50's do. We comb his curly wet hair after his bath and he always gets this flippy curl on top that looks like he should be driving a '57 Chevy!
Another flippy do picture with his cheesy smile!

Happy 5 Year Anniversary!

Today, Brad and I celebrated our 5 year wedding anniversary! It's so hard to believe that 5 years have already come and gone and my how things have changed! I thought I would have a little fun and do a timeline of some of the major moves and big news that we've had since we've been married.

  • August 1996 - Brad and I meet for the first time during one of our communications classes at Lee University. 4 years pass after college graduation before we see each other again.
  • January 2002 - My mom and I travel to NYC for a mom and daughter trip. We meet up with an old college friend, Brad, for breakfast.
  • April 2002 - I find out I'm getting transferred with my job as a flight attendant with American Airlines from Chicago to NYC. Brad lets me stay with him on 2 different weekends while I apartment hunt.
  • May 26, 2002 - I move to NYC. My mom and I fly up to settle me into my new place in Astoria, Queens.
  • September 2002 - Brad and I finally start to hang out after a long summer. We meet up every Monday night at the Haven - a Christian group for young professionals but mostly those in the entertainment industry.
  • October 2002 - Brad asks me out over the phone...I say yes.
  • Thanksgiving 2002 - My mom and dad come up to move me to my new apartment on the Upper East Side (89th and 1st Ave) with my new friends. We stay at Brad's house while he's in TN with his family.
  • November 2002 - We go out on our first date. Brad planned it all out - first a movie (Punch Drunk Love which we both hated and laugh about even today!). Then, knowing that I love Indian food, he took me to a quaint place in Soho and then planned to have dessert at Peanut Butter and Co (peanut butter is my favorite thing on the planet), so we had a nice walk there. I was smitten by his thoughtfulness!
  • December 8, 2002 - I meet Brad's mom for the first time this weekend and on my way home from one of our dinners, I get mugged and assaulted (all while on the phone with Brad), and taken to the hospital. Brad realizes he wouldn't know what to do if anything ever happened to me...awh.
  • January 15, 2003 - My mom passes away.
  • March 22, 2003 - Brad proposes to me! It may sound like it happened very fast but when it's right, it's right and it was instrumental in my healing after the loss of mama.
  • March 27, 2004 - We got married in Goldsboro, NC at my home church Patetown Church of God. We spent a week on our honeymoon in St. Kitts at the Golden Lemon Inn & Villas and had the time of our lives.
  • August 2004 - We move from our cute brownstone apartment in Brooklyn Heights to our next home on the Upper West Side's 72nd Street & Broadway in Manhattan.
  • October 2004 - We find Bleeker online and have him shipped from Lucama, NC to Newark Airport. When we picked him up, he was so small and timid...not the case anymore! Later we learned to never order pets online because they usually come from puppy mills...so sad. Part of us wonders if he was because of some of his mannerisms but I try not to think about it...it makes me way too sad. He was definitely our little baby and we completely treated him like one...still do to some extent!
  • August 2005 - Brad's ad agency in NYC moves us to London. During that year, we traveled to Venice for Brad's 30th, Prague for Easter, Barcelona for my 30th, Paris on a few occasions, Dublin in July to meet the Laughlins on their vacation, Bath for our 2 year anniversary, and Cambridge and Devon. What fun we had living there! Not to mention the great friends we made...miss you guys!
  • August 2006 - We move to Atlanta. Brad and I realized that we needed to be closer to family and thought why not try Atlanta? Brad found a job at an agency there and they moved us from London.
  • October 2006 - We buy our first place...a condo in Buckhead. We would later realize what a BIG mistake that was.
  • May 2007 - We find out we're PREGNANT! How exciting...we're gonna be parents!
  • June 2007 - We go on vacation to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. Brad gets really sick and my morning sickness begins...not a fun trip at all and we will probably never go there again due to the horrible memories! The months leading up to this vacation, we realized that we could never be happy in Atlanta and needed to find a city that suits us. For those that have lived in NYC, it's very hard to ever live anywhere else. You compare EVERYTHING to it. In June, Brad sent his resume to his old boss in NYC who is now the CEO of an agency in DC. He brought him to DC right away to interview/meet team members and they hired him right away.
  • August 2007 - We move to Washington, DC (Old Town Alexandria to be exact). Has anyone seen a pattern here? We move every August? I'm over it!
  • We started going to Downtown Baptist Church within a few weeks of living here and haven't left it since! Our friends there have become our family and we love it!
  • January 24, 2008 - Baker is born at 7 lbs .5 oz at 3:01 am! Our world is forever changed for the better.
  • January 24, 2009 - We survived the first year with Baker and no one got hurt!
  • April 2009 - We're moving (and it's not August) but this time to a bigger place in the District...our biggest home to date! Good things are happening for the Blackmon family!
So, I hope you enjoyed reading how crazy our life has been in the 6 years we've been together. It was pretty fun for me to type all of that out. It brought back a lot of memories. The past 5 years have been amazing and I can only imagine how much better the next 5 are going to be! I couldn't have been blessed with a more generous, kind, handsome, Christian, selfless husband and I love him with all of my heart!

Update:

Just one more bit of news to share - We're moving mid-April! But don't get nervous. We're staying in DC, moving into the district to the Capitol Hill neighborhood to be specific. We're so desperate for more space and found an old Victorian townhome built in 1890 just a few blocks from the Capitol building. We'll be within walking distance to the National Mall or we can take a quick Metro ride to it and all of the museums. It's very exciting! Better yet, the place is huge...well, huge for us! It's about 1700 sq ft (compare that to the 900 sq ft we live in now and to the 500 sq ft apts we lived in NYC and London), has 2 huge bedrooms, a smaller guest room, 1 1/2 baths, big open living room and dining room, separate breakfast nook off of the kitchen and a small patio in the back. What a change from what we have now! It is over a hundred years old but so charming. We're very excited! So, I apologize in advance if I'm lacking on the blog front. I know that the next few weeks will begin to get hectic and my time may be limited. So, be patient with me. I will get back on track sooner than later!
Two Week Catch-up

So, we're still without our camera but the good news is that our new one comes in today! We decided to go with another small point and shoot camera for convenience sake. I didn't really want to tote a big camera around when we were out. And as much as I would love an SLR camera, they are a bit pricey and we have too many expenses for that right now. We are really excited, or at least I am, about getting the new one today!! I did manage to take a few pictures in the past few days with our old, ancient digital camera. This thing seems so stone age compared to the ones they sell today but I got a few pics nonetheless. Aunt Brenda, these are for you because I know you said you needed your fix!

Baker loves to take the sides off of his wagon so that he can climb into it.

This picture was taken just before the camera officially went on the fritz...probably because I dropped it but I was trying to grab Baker and it fell out of my hand.

You can see the fuzziness in this one but I love it anyway. Brad attached Baker's monkey to his back and he played like that forever, until it was time to go to bed. It's also ironic that he's playing with the vacuum cleaner because it scares him when it's on.
But he was entertained for a long time!

Can you tell why we need another camera?

I go to Baker's room to check on him every night just before we go to bed. It's also just so I can see how sweet he is when he sleeps. I could watch it forever. I was very brave this night a few weeks ago when I attemted to take a picture. I can't believe how bright it is with the flash...looks like it's middle of the day. But he didn't even flinch.

Precious!

Sunday was gorgeous and 62 so we walked over to Founder's Park with Bleeker and met our friends, Carolyn, Ed and Noah out there. I don't know what happened but
I have no pictures of them. :( I think the "slow as Moses" camera got me too frustrated.
Sitting by the water of the Potomac River

Baker walking through the park. He was so timid and wanted to stay very close by. With a little encouragement, he started to explore a bit. Still a few weeks in to walking, he's not totally confident in his stride just yet.

There was the cutest little yorkie and being the dog lover that Baker is (he gets it honestly), he walked over to her and wanted to play. A dog will always get his attention!

Camera Blues

This is simply a post to explain why I've not posted anything in a week. Our camera is on the fritz and has apparently decided to retire. I would have loved to posted pictures from our day at the park the other day or other funny things that have happened this week but oh well. I did manage to catch some pics on my camera phone so maybe I'll post those. So, we are on the market for a new camera...ugh, we'd much rather be saving that money but it's a must! If anyone has any suggestions for cameras they'd love or wish they had (keeping cost in mind), do let us know as we want something that gets many stars in your opinion.

One Crazy Day

The other day, Wednesday I believe, Baker had one of those days where he was an absolute angel, toddling around everywhere. Which by the way, I love his Frankenstein walk...hilarious! Seriously, if I could have bottled him up, I would have and sipped on it all day long! He was just the best. But being sweet doesn't mean he isn't up to no good at times. This day just seemed to be one thing after the other. Kids will be kids!

Being sweet Baker - he loves to lay his head down on the sofa.
Let the fun begin -

He moved the play table from one side of the room to the other, then back,
then back to the door.
He thought it was funny that he rearranged his toys!

Then he decided to flip it upside down and climb on it.

What fun he had finding new ways to play!

I stepped away for a second, turned back around and saw that he had taken my cup off the desk and was drinking out of it! His entire outfit and the floor was drenched with water!
12 Month Check-up (at 13 1/2 months) and Oh the Drama

At last, Baker finally had what was supposed to be his 12 month check-up this past week, over a month later. We've had several appointments scheduled and rescheduled due to the weather or unplanned traveling. Usually, these visits go very smoothly - Baker gets stripped down to his diaper, height measured, weighed, etc - and he does great, sitting there patiently while the doctor does their thing. Well, not this visit. I'm not sure what happened but Baker was having none of it! It didn't help matters that his appointment fell in the middle of his naptime but we took the time slot we could get - bad idea and won't do that again if I can help it! We had to wait quite a while before getting called and then after the nurse left we had to wait again for the doctor (only this appointment we saw the nurse practitioner). So, the time that lapsed did not help matters either.

Things got bad when the nurse laid him on the table to measure how long he was. But we had no idea how upset Baker was gonna get when he had to be weighed. He not only was weighed once, but she had to weigh him again because the first time showed that he had lost 2 lbs since his last check-up...this time on the other scale. Needless to say, this did not fare well with our little one. In the end, he weighed 22 lbs 12 oz (50%ile) and was 32" long (90%ile). So, Baker has lost about a pound and went from the 90%ile to the 50%ile since his last visit but they weren't too worried knowing how active toddlers are and how less interested they become in eating. When the NP came in, Baker just wasn't having any of the exams that she wanted to do. It was so out of character for him and pretty much screamed the majority of the visit. We kept apologizing but they assured us they see this all the time. We were shocked to find out that the MMR isn't scheduled until he's 15 months old but were totally prepared to tell them we're waiting on this one until we feel comfortable with it. We'll evaluate it at 18 months and if not then, probably at 2 years. He ended up getting only one shot (Pc) and didn't care for that at all, but honestly, who likes needles? Good news is that his anemia test can back okay this time around but we will continue iron rich foods and vitamins. All in all, it was a uniquely stressful visit but we're just hoping that the future ones are better. Baker is clearly aware of what's going on around him now and his fear set in on this trip to the doctor. Better luck next time! (I still managed to snap a few shots capturing the unhappy moments!)

1st time on the scale - "Mommy, why are you letting them do this to me?"

2nd time - "Are you serious? Not again!" - Clearly hysterical, this tore my heart out but he had
to be weighed again.

Daddy holding him and letting him know everything was okay while the
NP checked his breathing.

Later that day - He got into a bit of bind, wrapping his bucket around his neck. I don't know how he manages to get into the predicaments he gets into!

Exploring, Gymboree, and the Zoo

This weekend, Brad and I had quite a few things to do. Bleeker had to be taken to the groomer that morning, the car needed to be washed from the salt that was all over due to the snow, and Old Town's Saint Patrick's day parade was that afternoon. So while Brad picked Bleeker up from the groomer, Baker and I walked over to the parade for a few minutes. The weather was absolutely glorious (still is today!), so we got to really enjoy it without being all bundled up. Then we needed to make up a class at the Gymboree that we had previously missed, so we scheduled to go on Saturday. It was a lot of fun having Brad go with us because it's usually just Baker and I. Baker really enjoyed having him there too.

As soon as we left the Gymboree, we drove into the District to look for new neighborhoods to live in. Even though Old Town is only minutes away from DC, we want to be more in the heart of it...you know us, we love more of the city life. So, we drove up to Cleveland Park, Woodley Park, and Dupont Circle to check out the potential that they all have if we were to move there. The great thing about living in any of these neighborhoods is that there school systems are great, they all have a Metro station within walking distance (Old Town does too but where we live, it's quite a walk), and just have a different energy about them. Woodley Park is where the National Zoo is so you can imagine that would be convenient for us! We're also thinking of the Capitol Hill area and have friends that live there so that would be nice. There's lots to consider so stay tuned!

While we were out, even though it was already 4 pm, we made a pit stop to the Zoo - Baker's 1st trip to the zoo! What fun we had, despite that it was getting late and some of the exhibits had already closed (the time had changed yet). We only spent a little over an hour there but we're planning another trip back soon!
Baker's new love - an old phone. He carries it everywhere, cord included. Trust me, we watch him closely with the cord and all!
Bleeker trying to get his ball out of Baker's basketball goal. The way he acted, you'd of thought that the goad was going to attack him...he was so scared!

Ah, got it!

Looking like a puppy...he continues to carry things around in his mouth!

Standing on the teeter totter - He was very happy to have daddy there!

Getting ready to go on a parachute ride! I think he's finally getting used to it. He didn't try to get off or cry at all this time!
